Glow-in-the-Dark vs Light-Up Loungefly Bags: How to Tell the Difference
Share
You'll see "Glow" in some Loungefly titles and "Light-Up" in others. They name two separate features, and each of the five bags in this guide lists one of them. This guide explains how to tell which one a bag has, using the wording in our own product listings. It then walks through five bags we carry: four that glow in the dark and one that lights up.
Every product detail below comes from the listings on our site, and where we do our own arithmetic, we say so. Where a listing names the exact part of the bag that glows or lights up, we quote it. Where it doesn't, we say so.
Do Loungefly Backpacks Glow in the Dark?
Some do. For the five bags in this guide, the listing states whether the bag glows in the dark or lights up. Of those five:
- four are described as glow-in-the-dark, and
- one is described as light-up.
None of the five lists both effects.
Glow-in-the-Dark vs Light-Up: What the Listings Say
- Glow-in-the-dark. These listings say part or all of the bag "glows in the dark" (on the Michael Myers mini, it's the front pocket), and three of the four mention "after dark." None of the four glow listings in this guide mentions a battery, a switch or any other power source.
- Light-up. The light-up listing in this guide names the feature on one part of the design: "Light-up jack-o'-lantern Badtz-Maru." It doesn't say what powers the feature, whether it has a switch, or how long it stays lit.
In short, the listings tell you which effect a bag has and sometimes where it sits. For the light-up bag here, the listing doesn't tell you how the feature is powered.
How to check a listing before you buy
- Read the title. All five bags in this guide have "Glow," "Glow in the Dark" or "Light-Up" in the title.
- Find the "Special Features" line. It's under Product Details, and it's where each of these listings names the effect. For example, the Badtz-Maru line starts with "Light-up jack-o'-lantern Badtz-Maru," and the Michael Myers line starts with "Glow-in-the-dark jack-o'-lantern pocket."
- Look for where the effect sits. Some listings name a spot, like the front pocket on the Michael Myers mini. Others only say the bag or the character glows.
- Don't rely on the phrase "lights up" alone. The Michael Myers listing is a glow-in-the-dark bag, yet it describes its glowing pocket as one that "lights up after dark." The title and the Special Features line are the clearer guide.
- Look for power details. If you're buying a bag for the light-up feature, check whether the listing mentions a battery or a switch. The light-up listing here doesn't.

One note on the metric figures: the Michael Myers listing gives 22.9cm × 26.7cm, and the other three minis give 22.8cm × 26.6cm. By straight conversion, 9 inches is 22.86cm and 10.5 inches is 26.67cm, so both describe the same inch measurements, rounded differently.
Light-Up Loungefly Bags
Badtz-Maru Pumpkin Light-Up Cosplay Mini Backpack

Sanrio's Badtz-Maru is dressed as a jack-o'-lantern on the front, and the listing's Special Features line starts with "Light-up jack-o'-lantern Badtz-Maru." It also has sparkle polyurethane details, candy, jack-o'-lanterns and bats on the side panels, and appliqué bats on the shoulder straps. It's made of polyurethane, with a top handle and adjustable shoulder straps. The listing doesn't say what powers the light-up feature.

Glow-in-the-Dark Loungefly Bags
Michael Myers Pumpkin Glow Mini Backpack with Coin Bag

This listing is specific about the glow: the jack-o'-lantern-shaped front pocket glows in the dark. Michael Myers rises over that pocket in appliqué, holding a knife with a metallic vegan leather "blade." The knife also works as a removable coin bag. The side pockets show dark branches, grass and barbed wire, and there's a knife print on the back panel. It's dark green vegan leather with brown trim, gunmetal-colored hardware, and padded, adjustable dark brown shoulder straps.

Coraline Other Mother Glow in the Dark Cosplay Mini Backpack

The listing says the Other Mother glows in the dark, but it doesn't say which parts. She's on the front with buttons for eyes, plus debossed and embroidered details, and spider webs run across the rest of the bag. The listing notes in-house Loungefly artwork, polyurethane construction, a top handle and adjustable shoulder straps.

ParaNorman Norman & Zombies Glow in the Dark Mini Backpack

Norman is on the front surrounded by zombies, and the side pockets show other characters from the film. The listing says the bag glows in the dark but doesn't name specific areas. It has appliqué, debossed and printed details, in-house Loungefly artwork, polyurethane construction, a top handle and adjustable shoulder straps.

Mickey & Minnie Mouse Ghost Glow Figural Crossbody Bag

This one is a crossbody rather than a backpack, and the whole bag is shaped like a ghost (the listing calls it "fully figural"). Turn it one way to show Mickey and the other way to show Minnie. A 3D bow adds a Minnie detail, and the listing says the bag glows in the dark. It's made of vegan leather (polyurethane) and has an adjustable crossbody strap.
It's narrower and shorter than the minis above. The listing gives 5.2"W × 8.6"H × 4.7"D. Subtracting those figures from the minis' 9"W × 10.5"H × 4.5"D, the crossbody is approximately 3.8 inches narrower and 1.9 inches shorter, and it's 0.2 inches deeper.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do any of these bags both glow and light up?
None of the five bags in this guide lists both. Each of these listings names its effect in the title and the Special Features line, so if you want a bag with both, check that both effects are named there.
Do light-up Loungefly bags need batteries?
The one light-up listing in this guide, Badtz-Maru, doesn't say what powers the light-up feature, whether it has a switch, or how long it stays lit, so we aren't going to guess.
Do glow-in-the-dark Loungefly bags need batteries?
None of the four glow listings in this guide mentions a battery, a switch or any other power source. They describe the bag or the character as glowing "in the dark."
How can I tell which part of the bag glows?
Read the description and the Special Features line. The Michael Myers listing names a spot: the jack-o'-lantern front pocket. The Other Mother, ParaNorman and ghost crossbody listings say the character or bag glows without naming specific areas.
What size are these glow and light-up bags?
All four mini backpacks in this guide list 9"W × 10.5"H × 4.5"D. The ghost crossbody lists 5.2"W × 8.6"H × 4.7"D. None of these listings gives separate interior measurements. If you're planning what to carry, measure your items and compare them with the listed width, height and depth, and leave some room to spare.
Final Thoughts
If the glow or the light is the reason you want a bag, read the Special Features line first. It tells you which effect the bag has, and sometimes where it is.
